The most important and enchanting part about this country is its main geographical regions, including mountains. The Castelo Branco to the city’s north is colder and drier than the rest of the country. You might also be shocked to learn that, except for the coastal Serra da Estrela, it is primarily mountainous, with elevations reaching about 2000 meters.

However, the country’s southern region, which reaches the Algarve, is primarily made up of heaving plains with a slightly warmer climate. In addition, there is more dryness in the south than in the north.

Rivers of Portugal

Concerning this, at least ten significant rivers have flowed through Portugal as per the Google Map of Portugal; five of them come from Spain. Also, it is no surprise that Portugal is home to many smaller rivers that supply water. Out of all, the longest river in Portugal is the Mondego. One of the most significant rivers, the Douro, rises in the Soria Province and empties into Porto.

The Duoro, which separates Portugal and Spain, is the third-longest river. Furthermore, these rivers are home to several dams and hydroelectric power facilities vital to Portugal’s economic and cultural development.

When talking about coastal areas, the ocean plays a huge role in the everlasting beauty of Portugal. Be it the seaside, the villages, or the capitals, every sigh makes you speechless. Starting with the one on the country’s rural side, Tavira is known for its slow and peaceful life. But, if you enjoy staying in quiet places but equally love to party, Ferragudo is your place to visit.

Furthermore, For a day away enjoyment spot, there is nothing better than Cascais from the popular Lisbon. Lastly, Azenhas do Mar, a tranquil fishing hamlet, is a great spot to visit if you want to do nothing. According to the tourist map of Portugal, it also has a gorgeous beach, breathtaking vistas, and mouthwatering seafood.

Major Cities of Portugal

Lisbon

Lisbon, on the Portugal map of Europe, is the capital and the largest city in Portugal. It is on the western coast and is quite popular for many reasons. Surprisingly, all the famous rivers of Portugal flow with Lisbon, making it the biggest city with an area of more than 84.8 km2 and more than  500,000 population. Lisbon is full of tourist activities and artisan scenes, which I believe need you more than 2 days to explore fully as it has much to offer every type of human.

Also, it is the oldest city in Portugal, surrounded by countries like London, Rome, etc. Since it is the official capital of Portugal, with written documentation, Lisbon’s first university was made in 1290, making it a center for higher education.

Porto

Porto comes after Lisbon, also known as the second largest city in Northern Portugal, with Douro rivers running alongside it. Porto is full of nightlife and is famous for its sweet wine. Porto is much more like Lisbon, full of breathtaking views and pleasant weather all year. Most importantly, the towns surrounding Porto are the most picturesque and offer fantastic scenery, including Lamego, Peso, etc.

In the end, the nation’s entire population comprises 176 smaller cities with populations that are over 10,000 but fall below 100,000. Also, there are six additional major cities with over 100,000, which is enormous. Portugal doesn’t have a city with over one million people in total, but in recent years, it has been considered that Lisbon will top the list. The most touristy city is the Figueira da Foz, as per the official survey conducted in Portugal.

Before ending, let me mention a hidden gem that gets missed from Lisbon to Porto, central Portugal. It is full of colors and eye-catching views, and you can easily spend weeks exploring. To do all of this, you must have your documents with you as per the Portugal officials, and here is what you need to know to live in Portugal.
